Test Format

Candidates are tested in listening, reading, writing and speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking modules. There is a choice between Academic and General Training in the Reading and Writing modules. The tests are designed to cover the full range of ability from non-user to expert user.
The first three modules (Listening, Reading and Writing) are completed in the morning, with the Speaking module completed during the afternoon of the test day. There is no break between the morning modules.

IELTS Reading

Because the reading section is considered to be the most difficult, we like to focus a good amount of attention on improving certain skills that will increase students’ ability to be successful, particularly skimming and scanning for speed and vocabulary preparation and review. We try to reiterate that the exam does not test how well you have understood the passage. Rather, it is designed to assess a student’s ability to pick up the necessary information quickly and accurately. We reinforce this to our students. Underlining information such as dates, places and names are positive habits which are practiced and reinforced daily.

IELTS Speaking

There are three components to the speaking portion of the test. Regardless of the section, instructors reinforce certain elements to students so that they can better project a perfect answer during the exam. Students are taught to organize their thoughts with a brief introduction, a detailed body with examples and a concluding sentence. Proper grammar, transition words and relevant vocabulary are stressed. Feedback is always given to the students so that may learn quickly what their weaknesses are. Students practice one on one with the instructor as well as with each other during class time.

IELTS Listening

The listening section is divided into four part and all are practiced in class. Whether the passage contains dialogues or monologues, students are taught skills to improve their chances for a good score on the exam. Underlining key words in each question such as “who”, “what”, “where” and “when” will tell the student what to listen for. This, word matching and focusing on the order of answers is taught to students and practiced daily.

IELTS Writing

The IELTS exam contains two separate tasks: the first asking the student to analyze charts and data and the second requiring the student to support a position and defend it with evidence. Our goal is to prepare the student for these tasks through daily practice. Students are guided by the instructor on how to fully prepare for each task by practicing correct grammar and sentence structure, topic sentences, main ideas, major details and providing clear examples. Overall, students will be prepared to give a clear, concise piece of writing that will demonstrate all of the skills they have learned in our program. Feedback is always given to the students so that may learn quickly what their weaknesses are.
